Gradients can be used to emphasize separate parts of an autobot or by having similar colours increase the cohesiveness. Black & white gradients as a tool to help determine where colours could be put. Attached are free sample black & white gradients for you.

Great observation, I agree. Grayscale gradients are a great analytical/exploratory tool, and can be quite aesthetically pleasing too.
